1. Attention Stance.

Feet shoulder width apart and the sword in the right hand. Right thumb is pressed lightly against the

sword guard. The left hand is laid lightly, but firmly on the front of the left thigh.

 

2. Transfer sword to left side.

The sword is drawn its length and the tip presented to the left hand. The tip is inserted into a circle formed by the left thumb and forefinger and the sword is thrust into the �sheath� smoothly and firmly.

                                                                                 

 

 

3. Bow.

Executed from the waist to about a thirty degree

angle. The eyes remain focused ahead.

 

 

 

4. Attention stance.

Sword is held in the left hand with the left thumb pressed lightly against the sword guard. The right hand is laid slightly to the outside of the right thigh in a relaxed manner.


 

 

First Strike: Turning Draw and Cut

 

1. Attention stance.

The sword is held in the left hand with the left thumb pressed lightly against the sword guard (k�o dung I) facing the 12 o�clock position.

 

 

 

 

2. First Preparatory Step

Stepping to the rear with the left foot.

 

 

 

 

3. Second Preparatory Step

Initiated with a slight outward turn of the right foot, and maintaining the sword in sheathed position, step forward with the right foot, maintaining contact

with the floor.

 

 

4. Initiate Turn

Moving from a center of gravity just below the

waist, and maintaining the sword position, the advanced left foot is rotated at the ankle step by pivoting on the ball of the foot.

 

 

 

5. Preparation to Draw

As the ankle turn is completed and the heel points directly at its target at the 12 o�clock position, the right hand secures the sword grip and rotates the sword 90 degrees in its sheath.

 

 

 

6. Drawing and Cutting

Pivoting on the balls of both feet, the sword as drawn as the right foot completes the pivot and extends towards the 12 o�clock position.

 

 

 

 

7. Execute Cut.

Complete the clockwise turn with a shallow ascending cut, the sword blade in a position extending up from the shoulder at a 45 degree angle and 45 degrees of center.

 

 

 

 

Second Strike: Rearward Turning; 

                                                                Descending Deep Diagonal Cut

 

 8. Initiate Turn

From its extended position the sword begins to retract towards the right shoulder, as the body begins to pivot on the ball of the right foot,  retracting the left foot towards the right as the turn progresses.

 

 

 

9. Preparation for Cut

The sword is in an overhead position for a descending 60 degree cut as left foot steps past the right foot causing the body to turn beneath the sword.

 

 

 

 

10. Initiate Cut.

Stepping back into an extended forward stance towards the 6 o�clock position, the sword stroke descends, following a path of 60 degrees, targeting the area of the opponent's collarbone.

 

 

 

11. Completion of strike. (SHOUT)

Weight is distributed approximately 80%

(right leg) to 20% (left leg) with the sword tip

extended passed and to the outside of the right knee.

 

 

 

Third Strike: Parry and Thrust

12. Preparation for Parry

The right foot is retracted slightly forward as the left hand opens wide, the yoke of the left hand straddling the sword grip just beneath the grip of the right hand.

 

 

 

13. Parry 

Drawing the left foot forward, and pivoting about the yoke of the left hand, the sword turns toward, past and finally over the left hip such that the sword edge is up.

 

 

 

14. Preparation to Thrust

The sword continues to turn and is drawn slightly towards the center of gravity. The  feet are side by side.

 

 

 

 

15. Thrust

Stepping out with the left foot the thrust is executed targeting the opponent�s throat.

 

 

 

 

 

Fourth Strike: Descending Straight Cut;

                                       210 degree Turn

16. Recovery

Retract the sword to a shallow angle extending across and just in front of the hips.  The left foot is drawn back even with and a foot width to the side of the right foot.

 

 

 

17. Initiate Turn

Pivoting on the ball of the right foot, the shoulder rolls just under the sword as it continues to retract.

 

 

 

 

18. Completion of Turn

Executing a half step with the left foot, the turn on the ball of the right foot is completed. The sword is held over head for downward strike.

 

 

 

 

19. Initiate Cut

Stepping forward towards an 11 o�clock position the sword begins its downward cut.

 

 

 

 

20. Cut 

In a single sharp motion, the right foot steps 

forward and the sword cuts to a position about 6 inches above the floor and slightly to the inside of the right knee.

 

 

 

 

Fifth Strike: Descending Straight Cut;

                                                 180 degree Turn

 

21. Initiating the Turn

Maintaining the sword at approximately the position of its last cut, pivot on the ball of the right foot and point the left foot towards the 5 o�clock position. The Sword will naturally rise to a low guard position.

 

 

 

22.Completing the Turn

The right foot completes its pivot to also point

 towards the 5 o�clock position. The sword is raised

overhead to striking position.

 

 

23. Initiate Cut

As the right foot steps forward the sword begins the cut.

 

 

 

 

24. Competing the Cut

As the right foot completes its step, the sword ends

its downward strike, about 24 inches from the floor.

 

 

 

 

Sixth Strike: Horizontal Strike; 90 degree Turn

 

25. Recovery

Raising sword toward a High Guard position, the left foot is drawn forward and to one side of the right heel.

 

 

 

 

26. Initiate Cut

Stepping forward with the right foot, the toes pointed towards the 8 o�clock position, the sword descends to a horizontal plane.

 

 

 

 

27. Follow Through

As the right step is completed, the sword cuts from the 5 o�clock position to the 11 o�clock position with the focus of the cut at the 7:30 o�clock position.

 

 

 

 

28. Completed Cut

The blade extends from the shoulder in a horizontal plane but does not cut past the line of the body as defined by the outside of the shoulder.

 

 

 

 

 

Seventh Strike: Thrust

 

29. Recovery

Maintaining the edge of the sword to the right, retract the sword towards the middle of the chest as the right foot steps even with the left foot.

 

 

 

 

30. Initiate Thrust

As the left foot steps forward the left hand rotates about the sword grip while the right hand grasps it firmly.

 

 

 

 

31. Thrust (Shout)

Stepping forward with the right foot into an extended Forward Stance, the sword is thrust forward. The sword executes a quarter-turn which redirects the edge upwards from its original lateral position. The target is the opponents� throat area.

 

 

 

32. Recovery

Retract the right foot and pivot the body towards the  2 o�clock position, drawing the sword from its thrust position. The arms remain somewhat extended in preparation for the next strike. All  movements from this point to the end of the form are executed with grace and heightened awareness.

 

 

 

33. Initiate Cut

Stepping through with left foot the sword towards, then over the right shoulder.

 

 

 

 

34. Follow Through.

The sword executes a Descending Straight Cut towards the 2 o�clock position as the right foot completes it step.

 

 

 

 

35. Completion.

The descending cut is completed at waist level with the blade nearly horizontal with the floor.

 

 

 

 

36.Recovery

Assuming Middle Guard Position, the left foot pivots slightly towards the 12 o�clock position.

Resheathing the Sword (Kko Ja Kal)

 39. Recovery

Retract the sword to a shallow angle extending across and just in front of the left hip. The left wrist rests lightly on the belt at the hip. The left thumb and forefinger are joined at the finger tips to form an "O".  The back of the sword blade, just forward of the guard rests lightly in the juncture between the two fingertips.

 

 

40. Draw

In a single steady motion draw the length of the word over the juncture of the fingertips, allowing the blade to ride smoothly on it�s side over the first knuckle of the index finger.

 

 

 

41. Sheathing

Insert the tip of the sword into the opening of the sheath  ("O") and press the sword into its sheath with a single steady pressure, once again allowing it to glide smoothly on the side of the blade.

 

 

 

42. Rotation

At the completion of sheathing, rotate the sword

 and sheath 90 degrees.

 

 

 

43. Attention Stance 

In a balanced stance, with feet about a shoulder width apart Complete the form by executing a bow from the waist.
